Tatreez Garden

Ameera Kawash

Tatreez, a unique form of Palestinian embroidery, has been traditionally crafted by Palestinian women from rural communities. Rooted in a history that spans thousands of years, tatreez is not only a wearable art form but an expression of identity, resistance, and cultural memory.

In this project, I explore tatreez as a feminist practice rooted in craft and connection to ecology, serving as a means of safeguarding collective memory and maintaining diasporic connections to place. By reinterpreting traditional cross-stitch patterns through generative AI, I blend these designs with images of local flora, creating new outcomes as an evolving archive of possibilities. This process prompts me to take a more artisanal approach to data curation and processing.
